"Guardians of Creation" Younger Youth Retreat, March 5-7, 2010

What a joy to gather with about 90 younger youth, their adult advisors, and the Youth Council for a very inspirational and enjoyable retreat! As one would imagine - there was much energy and enthusiasm! The teenage members of the Youth Council have developed impressive leadership skills, not only for organization and creativity, but also for leading energizers, small group discussions, and worship.
The first evening, as co-sponsors of the retreat, we had an opportunity to welcome the participants, to highlight upcoming events and new programs, and to feature our gorgeous SCMT display board Sherri created! It drew a lot of attention and interest! THANK YOU, Sherri!
The Rev. Carl Horton did an excellent job as the keynote presenter! He focused on each aspect of the theme in each of his three very creative presentations. First he explored taking care of the earth and we identified the place or part of creation in which we feel most connected. In caring for ourselves, he emphasized accepting ourselves as created in the image of God. And in caring for others, he highlighted the mission opportunities we have all around us, and God's call to love one another.
Having the Three River Avian Center there with six birds of prey was definitely a highlight for all of us! Seeing those owls, falcons, a hawk and a golden eagle up close were thrilling! We learned a lot about how we can better care for raptors and other wildlife - for example, trash on the side of the road brings wild animals and birds to the road to eat.

The other activities, such as creating scrap paper beads for necklaces and bracelets - thanks to Sherri Walker, planting seeds for commuity gardens, and recreation filled the weekend with meaningful activities.

During our meeting with the adult advisors, we highlighted the Eco-Stewards program for young adults, and the concluding weekend gathering for everyone. There was lots of interest!
Seven Congregational Surveys, from our Churches as Guardians of Creation: Take 10 Steps in 2010, were completed by adult representatives of those congregations. It was exciting to see how many congregations are already incorporating stewardship of creation in their church. We look forward to following up with these congregations and to other opportunities to partner with the Youth Council and build on the relationships we started.
